The Sun emits huge amounts of energy every instant, while an excess of this energy may be bad for life as in the greenhouse effect it has been supporting life since photosynthesis appeared.

There are also quite big requirements for energy in industrialized countries increasing at a faster pace each time. A huge energy supply and huge energy requirements seems like an easy to solve equation, for example when deciding to take solar energy from the Sahara for Europe or to extract the solar energy directly from space. That may be the reason for the trend in solar powered devices, as mobile phones, or pretty much everything. There are even plans to use solar energy in Mars colonies o start off on the right foot.

The Sun could be a brand new god, if it wasn’t because it may be the oldest.

PD: Solar energy may not be that great for Mars, though, because of distance the energy received is about 50% of the energy to Earth and dust storms are not rare. Thx to Michal for pointing out.
